What to Wear for Your Beach Family Photos
As a Wilmington, NC family photographer who specializes in body positivity, one of the most common questions I get before a session is: “What should we wear?”
And I get it—choosing outfits for your beach family photos can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already juggling kids, naps, and snack times.
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to wear neutrals to look good on the beach. In fact, bold colors can be absolutely stunning—especially when paired with confidence and love.
Take my recent family portrait session at Bald Head Island. The mom (who had just had a baby, by the way—amazing) chose a palette of emerald green, an aray of blues, and crisp whites for her crew.
It was fresh, vibrant, and honestly one of the most beautiful color combinations I’ve ever seen against the soft sand and ocean blues.
She didn’t stick to the usual beige or pale pinks—she went for it, and it worked.
But what made her truly shine? She wore something she felt good in. Her maxi dress was flattering, but more importantly, she felt comfortable and confident—and that showed up in every photo.
So if you’re planning your own beach family photo session, here are a few body-positive outfit tips:
✅ Choose comfort first. If you’re adjusting, tugging, or holding your breath, the outfit isn’t worth it.
✅ Celebrate your shape. Flowy fabrics, wrap dresses, or fitted tops with wide-leg pants all photograph beautifully.
✅ Add color! Don’t be afraid to go bold. Jewel tones like emerald, cobalt, or deep burgundy can really pop against the beachy backdrop.
✅ Coordinate, don’t match. Think harmonious tones instead of identical outfits.
✅ Dress for you. This is your family photo session, and you deserve to feel amazing in what you wear—no matter your size or season of life.
