How to Prepare Your Home for a Family Photo Session
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from families is: “Our house isn’t photo-ready.”
Let me say this loud and clear — it doesn’t need to be.
That’s the beauty of in home family sessions. They’re about connection, comfort, and real life — not perfection. A little prep goes a long way, and it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
Here’s how to get your home ready without stress.

Focus on the Light, Not the Whole House
We’ll naturally gravitate toward areas with the best natural light — usually living rooms, bedrooms, or kitchens. You don’t need to clean every inch of your home. Pick 2–3 spaces and give those a little extra love.
Open the curtains, let the light pour in, and trust me to find the flattering angles.
Declutter, Don’t Deep Clean
For in home family sessions, think “tidy,” not “spotless.”
A good rule of thumb:
• Clear countertops
• Put away stray toys (a few out is totally fine! And wooden toys and hard cover books look the best.)
• Hide cords, bags, and random clutter
You don’t need to scrub baseboards or organize closets — I promise.

Choose Neutral Touches
If you have time, simple swaps make a big difference:
• Neutral throw pillows
• Cozy blankets
• Solid-colored bedding
These photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family, not distractions.
Wear What Feels Like You
Your outfits should match the vibe of your home — cozy, relaxed, and comfortable. Soft textures, neutral tones, and layers work perfectly for in home family sessions. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows.

Let Go of “Perfect”
Kids will be kids. Beds will wrinkle. Someone might spill something.
That’s real life — and that’s exactly what makes these sessions so meaningful.
The magic of in home family sessions is capturing your family as you are right now. Years from now, you won’t remember the mess — you’ll remember the snuggles, laughter, and love.
