After photographing families for over a decade,
I’ve learned one thing: the best photos aren’t about perfect poses—they’re about real moments.
I get it.
When you book a family session, you imagine picture-perfect smiles, everyone looking at the camera, outfits coordinating just right.
But the truth? The magic happens in between the poses—the smiles when a toddler refuses to sit still, the way a dad looks at his daughter, the quiet moment when give a gentle squeeze to her son.
Early in my career, I thought my job was to create perfection. I’d pose families meticulously, adjust every detail, and make sure everyone was looking in the right direction.
However when I looked back at those images, they felt… staged.
Beautiful, yes, but they lacked the energy and emotion that makes a photo truly special.
Then, one session changed everything. I was photographing a family at the beach, and their little boy wanted nothing to do with my instructions.
Instead of standing still, he ran straight into the waves, laughing uncontrollably. His parents chased after him, their faces full of joy. I kept clicking, capturing the moment as it unfolded naturally.
When I delivered the gallery, the mom’s favorite image wasn’t the one where they were all standing together—it was the one where they were soaking wet, out of breath, and grinning from ear to ear.
That’s when I realized: real moments tell the best stories.
I guide families into experiences, not just poses.
We play games, tell jokes, and create movement.
Instead of asking a child to “smile,” I might ask them to whisper a silly secret in their sibling’s ear.
Instead of forcing a perfect stance, I encouraged the Ritchie parents to play with their kids. They went on adventures, looked for shells, and walked the beach. The kids, played in the sand jumped on mom and dad and raced one another.
These small interactions create genuine expressions—the kind that make you feel something when you look back years later.
So, if you’re planning a family session, let go of perfection.
Don’t stress about every hair in place or every child looking directly at the camera. Trust that the real, unplanned moments—the ones filled with laughter, connection, and love—are the ones you’ll treasure the most.
