How to Have a Stress-Free Family Session (Even with Kids!)

How to Have a Stress-Free Family Session (Even with Kids!)

Family photo day doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can actually enjoy the experience—and walk away with beautiful images that capture your family’s true connection. Here’s how to keep your next stress-free family session fun and relaxed, even with little ones in the mix. Take for example the recent family I photographed: The Kish Family. Their were not one, but two one year olds in this generational family session. One sweet girl was tired and the other only wanted to be in the water. So this is what the Kish family and I accomplished…

1. Let Go of Perfection.
The best photos happen when you focus on being together, not on looking perfect. Kids will be kids—and that’s part of what makes your images genuine. I’ll capture the laughter, snuggles, and sweet in-between moments that tell your family’s real story. Their sweet girl only wanted to be in the water… she had no fear. So we took family portraits in the water. ✨ Photo Tip: Want to knot the truth about “perfect” family photos? Read this. 🙂

2. Prepare Early.
Choose outfits a few days before your session and have everything ready to go. Pack water and a mess-free snack (because hungry kids are never happy models!). Showing up early and relaxed sets the tone for a truly stress-free family session. This sweet little family of three did exactly that! This sweet girl was hungry and tired but mom gave her an apple sauce pouch and after that she was all smiles.

3. Keep It Playful.
Think of your session as family playtime with a camera nearby. I’ll guide you with easy prompts and fun activities so no one feels stiff or awkward. When everyone’s laughing and moving naturally, the magic happens.

4. Go With the Flow.
If your child needs a break, that’s perfectly fine! A quick cuddle, snack, or moment to regroup helps everyone stay calm and happy. Flexibility is key to a stress-free family session. We let the kids take a lot of breaks during this session, which worked perfectly because we captured some of the couples and other family portraits during this time. Then when the kiddos were ready again we continued. 🙂

5. Trust the Process.
You don’t need to worry about posing or getting everyone to smile at the same time—that’s my job! My goal is to help your family feel confident, comfortable, and connected so you can relax and enjoy your time together.
