Senior Photographer | Kiersten’s Senior Session

As a senior photographer, one question that I get asked a lot is, “what do I wear for my high school senior portraits?”. Typically, you may feel the need to go for something over-the-top and extravagant. However, if the outfits don’t feel like you, almost as a rule of thumb, you may not be satisfied with the outcome. To avoid this, I would like to give you a few pointers for choosing your clothes for your senior session.

For starters, and most importantly, choose outfits you feel comfortable in. Something to showcase your uniqueness. Don’t feel the need to pick up something just because somebody else did it – the point of your session is to present yourself. That said, from long-flowing whimsical dresses, to academia-inspired preppy outfits, the choice is completely up to you!

Additionally, I suggest that you pick up a few accessories as well. From my experience as a senior photographer, some people don’t know what to do with their hands. At times it can be quite awkward for them. Accessories act as the perfect pick-me-up, giving your hands something to do while they gorgeously accentuate your outfit. Finally, don’t feel the need to buy special clothes just for the session. Instead, shop your closet first, and pick up a few necessary pieces – leave the shopping spree for another time! You may already have something in your closet that makes you feel confident and good about yourself. That is the perfect outfit for your senior session.

Kiersten, a gorgeous senior with whom I had the most fantastic time, had no problem choosing her outfits. We went out to Fort Fisher, the majestic beach surrounded by 100-year-old oaks, where we started taking beautiful portraits. She wore a muted coral one-piece and a hat that perfectly blended in with the mystic trees. Next, Kiersten opted for the classic white tee and jeans, which allowed a lot more versatility in posing – something that dresses distinctively lacks. Lastly, her most striking piece was a dreamy floral violet dress that showed off her amazingly cheerful and kind personality. We photographed this one last and it paired beautifully with the warm golden sun that we were so lucky to receive at sunset.
