How to Photograph New Years Eve | Wilmington NC Photography

Celebrating New Years Eve? | How to get the perfect pictures of the night.
Want to know How to Photograph New Years Eve. Last year you promised your self you’d take pictures. This year, though, you’re equipped with my handy How To Photograph New Year’s Eve guide.

Step 1: Lightly Plan the Night

What do you want to photograph? Kids? Couples? Selfies? Create a list in your phone (because who will keep track of a little scrap of of paper all night?) and check it occasionally to be sure you’re capturing the moments you intended to get.

Some things to consider adding to your list:
The party – wide angles, shots from above, the action of the dance party, the toast to the New  Year.

The atmosphere – are you outside or inside? Having a cozy night at home or at a raging party on the waterfront? Let us see that starry night or the beautiful fireworks over the river!

Step 2: The Picture Taking Part

Once your plans are made, you can adjust your camera settings accordingly.
Speaking of atmosphere, you’ll want soft lighting (maybe some of those twinkly Christmas lights!) behind you and your guests. Try to steer away from the harsh light of your auto flash. The flash will wash out your faces, and no one will be grateful for that. Plus, twinkly Christmas lights make for great mood lighting… for the party and your photos!
It’s a great time to try out a  New Years/ New Angles mantra! How do you photograph from above? Wide angles? Close ups? Try ’em all – and there’s no pressure to actually show anyone.

Step 3: Enjoy the Night.

This one is most important. If you’re stressed about taking the perfect photo at the perfect moment, it’ll show in your photos. Likewise, spending time with your guests capturing candid and hilarious moments will make for great pictures – and those natural memories are the purpose of taking photos in the first place. Being in the moment, and having the photos to match, will be the perfect evidence that you’ve achieved your first New Year’s resolution of a night well spent…. and can we say selfie?!

Step 4: Are your kids joining you?

Consider a photo booth with props. How often do you get all dressed up with your kiddos? Let them join in the fun!
