I hear women say all the time, “I’m not photogenic.”
Growing up as a kid, body positivity wasn’t something I ever thought of. Even when I was a teenager and in most of my 20’s. I would have the occasional thought about my thick thighs or the shape of my nose, but it wasn’t something I really cared that much about. I would hear other women talk about the way they look especially in photos but it always seemed like a passing comment. And even to this day, especially as a family photographer, women tell me, “I’m not photogenic.” But the thing is, being photogenic has to do with confidence. So even though I think you are beautiful just the way you are, I want to give you tips on how to be more confident in your family portraits.
1. “T*ts up!”
Any fans of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’? Her agent, Susie, tells her “T*ts up!” There is a really good reason why… Good posture makes you seem more confident than slouching. Take it from someone who struggles with good posture… this is an absolute must! Make sure those “girls” of yours are up! 😉
2. “What do I do with my hands?”
Yes, it feels weird and unnatural especially in front of the camera… we don’t know what to do with our hands. but what we don’t want are hanging arms and hands. Always be touching someone. A hand on your kids shoulder, a hand on your spouses back. Even hands in pockets or on your hips is better than dangling hands. 😉
3. Show Affection
In addition to always be touching someone, show affection. Ok I know it can be awkward especially when some is watching you, like a photographer. But believe me I am not judging you, I am watching for a special moment between family members. When you can make a true, loving connection with your family, those make for the greatest and most cherished family photos. So if you are a more serious bunch be sure to snuggle, give kisses and hug. If you are more of a silly bunch laugh, tell jokes and tickle each other. It’s these everyday moments that will make you fall madly in LOVE with your family portraits.
4. Relax
Or at least try to. Believe me,I get it. Getting out of the house with kids is a feat in itself. Add in presentable for family portraits and on time, well fed with no tears. Ohhh put me out of my misery. Haha! But plan ahead give yourself plenty of time and take a deep breath. Kids really do feed off our energy so when you relax they will relax too. A relaxed family make for the best photos.
5. Focus on your kids.
Thats what family photography is all about, isn’t it? Being in the moment with your kiddos? Make sure to be in the moment with them, tickle them and just have fun! It takes the focus off the physical appearance of the people in the photos and puts the focus on the emotion in the photo.
