Keeping Kids Happy During a Family Photo Session
Ah, the classic mid-shoot meltdown! I’ve been there. Way more times then I like to admit. :/
You’ve chosen a beautiful setting, coordinated everyone’s outfits, and have smiles all around. Then, halfway through, your little one decides they’re over it. We’ve all been there. Kids are adorable and full of personality, but their attention spans? Well, let’s just say they have a time limit! But with my 15 years as a family photographer… I have a few tricks up my sleeve!
In a recent generational family photo session, I photographed a sweet four-year-old boy who hit that point right in the middle of our shoot. He started getting fidgety and, as it turned out, he was simply hungry and thirsty! It’s no surprise—kids often need little boosts to keep their energy up during a session, especially since kids this age have a short attention span.
Here are a few tips to help keep your kids happy during a family shoot:
- Bring Mess-Free Snacks: Think small, non-crumbly, non-sticky snacks like crackers or apple slices. Fruit snack work great too and you can use them as a bribe too. 😉 A quick nibble can help keep their energy up without causing too much mess.
- Pack Water: Being outdoors or in a studio can be surprisingly exhausting for kids. A little sip can work wonders.
- Embrace Their Personality: Let kids be themselves. If they’re ready for a break, a quick snack, or a change of scenery, lean into it! Sometimes these moments can result in the most genuine photos.
Being prepared is key to a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. The goal is to keep things light and flexible so that, no matter what, we capture authentic moments you’ll cherish forever.
